What Size Lift Kit Does Your Truck Actually Need?

A St. Louis shop’s plain-English guide to 2-inch, 4-inch, and 6-inch lifts — what each one changes, what it needs, and which fits how you drive.

Walk into any of our shops and ask about lift kits, and the first thing we ask back is simple: what do you want the truck to do? The right lift height falls out of that answer almost every time. A 2-inch leveling kit and a 6-inch bracket lift are completely different projects, with different parts lists, different costs, and different daily-driving trade-offs. Here is how the common lift sizes actually compare on the trucks we see around St. Louis.

What Lift Size Actually Means

When a kit says “3.5-inch lift,” that number is the added ride height at the suspension, usually quoted for the front of the truck. It is worth knowing what kind of lift you are looking at, because the label covers three very different things. A suspension lift raises the frame relative to the axles with taller springs, spacers, or relocation brackets — it adds real clearance under the truck. A body lift raises the cab and bed off the frame with pucks; it makes room for bigger tires cheaply but adds nothing under the axles. A leveling kit lifts only the front an inch or two to erase the factory nose-down rake.

Front and rear numbers often differ on purpose. A “3.5/2” kit lifts the front 3.5 inches and the rear 2, which keeps a slight rake for towing and hauling. If a listing only gives one number, it is almost always the front.

Rule of ThumbPick the tire first, then the smallest lift that clears it — not the other way around. Tire size determines most of the cost, the gearing effects, and how the truck drives every day. The lift is just what makes the tire fit.

1.5 to 2.5 Inches: Level & Stance

This is leveling-kit territory, and it is the right answer for more trucks than most people expect. Killing the factory rake makes a half-ton look planted, opens up room for a 33-inch tire on many trucks, and keeps the ride essentially stock. The trade-offs are modest but real. Spacer-only front kits can firm up the ride slightly and use up a bit of down-travel, and you are not gaining meaningful clearance under the diff. Installed, most small kits land in the hundreds rather than the thousands, though the exact number depends on your truck — quotes are free.

3 to 4 Inches: The Sweet Spot

This is the range most of our lift customers end up in, and for good reason. A 3.5- or 4-inch lift gives a truck an unmistakable stance, fits a 35-inch tire on many late-model half-tons with minor trimming, and still climbs into a normal parking garage. Done right, it also keeps factory-like road manners.

“Done right” is the key phrase. On trucks with independent front suspension, a quality mid-height kit includes corrected knuckles, control arms, or a differential drop to keep CV axles and ball joints at safe angles. Budget kits that skip those parts are where clunks, vibrations, and chewed-up front tires come from. 6 Inches & Up: The Full Build

A 6-inch lift is a commitment, and it looks like one. This height generally means a full bracket kit: new crossmembers, relocated suspension mounting points, longer shocks, extended brake lines, and often driveshaft work. The payoff is room for 35s with zero trimming or 37s with the right wheels, plus a presence that a 3-inch truck simply does not have.

Daily-driving trade-offs get bigger at this height too: climbing in and out, garage and parking clearance, a few lost mpg from the tires, and more driveline stress. Treat the table as a starting point, not gospel. What a given height needs varies by truck — a solid-axle Super Duty, an IFS half-ton, and a Gladiator all respond differently to the same number on the box.

Alignment, Driveline & the Details That Get Missed

The kit itself is only part of the job. Every lifted truck needs a proper alignment immediately after installation, and taller lifts should be re-checked after the suspension settles over the first several hundred miles. Caster in particular has to be dialed in, or the truck wanders on the highway — something you feel fast on I-64 or I-270.

Bigger tires also throw off the speedometer and odometer until they are recalibrated, and tall lifts change driveshaft angles enough to cause vibration if they are not corrected. Shop NoteAsk any shop quoting your lift what is included beyond the kit itself: alignment, brake line extensions, speedometer recalibration, and a re-torque after settling. If those are missing from the quote, the price is not really the price.

Which Size Should You Pick?

Start from how the truck actually gets used, not from photos:

  • Daily commuter that should look right: a leveling kit or 2-inch lift keeps the ride, the mpg, and the garage clearance while fixing the stance.
  • Daily driver that hits trails or hunting property on weekends: a quality 3–4-inch kit on 34s or 35s is the best all-around package we install.
  • Dedicated build or serious off-roader: a 6-inch-plus lift with matched wheels, tires, and driveline correction — planned as one project, not bolted together piecemeal.
  • Tow rig: stay conservative on height and keep rake in the plan; big lifts and heavy trailers need extra attention to geometry.

What size lift kit is best for a daily driver?

For most daily-driven trucks, a leveling kit or a quality 3–4-inch lift is the sweet spot. You get the stance and tire clearance without giving up ride quality, garage access, or easy entry. Beyond 4 inches, the daily trade-offs grow quickly.

Do I need new wheels and tires with a lift kit?

Not always. Leveling kits usually work fine with factory wheels. From about 3 inches up, most owners add larger tires and wheels with different offset for both looks and proper fitment — and at 6 inches, new wheels and tires are effectively part of the project.

Does a lift kit need an alignment?

Yes, every time. The truck needs a full alignment immediately after installation, and taller lifts should be re-checked after the first several hundred miles once the suspension settles. Skipping this is the fastest way to wander on the highway and wear out front tires.

Will bigger tires affect my speedometer?

Yes. A taller tire rolls farther per revolution, so your speedometer and odometer read slow until they are recalibrated. Recalibration is a quick programming job and should be part of any lift-and-tire package.

Are lifted trucks legal in Missouri?

Generally yes — Missouri is fairly permissive about lift height. Your equipment still has to work and be within legal specs, including headlight height and aim, and older vehicles must pass a safety inspection when sold or registered. Extreme builds should be discussed before parts are ordered.

How long does a lift kit installation take?

A leveling kit is typically done within a day. A 3–4-inch suspension lift with an alignment usually takes a full day. A 6-inch bracket lift with wheels, tires, and driveline work can run one to two days depending on the truck.

Will a lift kit change how my truck tows?

It can. Lifting changes hitch height and driveline geometry, and very tall lifts are not ideal for frequent heavy towing. If you tow regularly, tell your installer up front — keeping some factory rake and choosing a modest height keeps the truck working as a truck.
