Leveling Kit vs. Lift Kit: Which Does Your Truck Actually Need?
Two very different jobs that get talked about like they are the same thing — and how to tell which one your truck is really asking for.
Almost every suspension conversation at our counter starts the same way: I want it sitting a little higher and I want to run a bigger tire. That sentence can mean a $600 afternoon or a $5,000 build, and the difference comes down to how much height you are after and what the truck does the rest of the week. A leveling kit and a lift kit are not two sizes of the same part — they touch different components, cost very different money, and have very different side effects.

What a Leveling Kit Actually Does
Pickups leave the factory with rake: the nose sits an inch or two lower than the bed. That is deliberate. Load the bed or drop a trailer on the hitch and the rear squats down to roughly level. It is good engineering and most people hate the way it looks.
A leveling kit raises the front only, typically 1.5 to 2.5 inches, so the truck sits flat when it is empty. The rear does not move. Nothing under the truck gets any farther off the ground — your differential and crossmember sit exactly where they did before.
The three common types of hardware
- Strut spacers — a machined puck that goes on top of the factory strut assembly. Most modern half-tons use these.
- Coil spacers or preload spacers — sit inside the strut assembly against the coil, which requires a spring compressor and more labor.
- Torsion keys — on older torsion-bar front ends, these re-index the bar to crank the front up. Cheap, but they eat suspension travel and ride quality if you go too far.
What a leveling kit will not do
It will not give you real ground clearance, it will not fix a truck that already squats under a load, and on most half-tons it buys you exactly one tire size — often the difference between a 32-inch and a 33-inch tire, sometimes with a little trimming at the front of the wheel well. If somebody sold you a leveling kit as a way to run 35s, they oversold it.
What a Lift Kit Actually Changes
A lift kit raises the whole truck, front and rear, and depending on how tall you go it starts replacing parts rather than spacing them. There are two very different things sold under the word “lift.”
Suspension lift
This is the real one. The truck body and the frame rise relative to the axles, so you gain actual ground clearance and room for a much bigger tire. A 2- to 3-inch kit is often spacers plus longer shocks and a rear block or add-a-leaf. Once you get to 4 inches and up you are typically looking at new upper control arms, a knuckle or crossmember drop, longer brake lines and ABS lines, a track bar relocation, sometimes a driveshaft or carrier bearing spacer, and rear leaf packs instead of blocks.
Body lift
Pucks between the body mounts and the frame push the cab and bed up, usually 1 to 3 inches. The frame, axles, and suspension stay exactly where they were, so you gain fender clearance for tires but zero ground clearance underneath. It is cheaper, and it does not change your suspension geometry — but it also leaves a visible gap at the bumpers and requires extending steering shafts and shifter linkages on some trucks. We rarely recommend one on its own.

Those price ranges are installed, parts and labor, on common late-model half-tons and three-quarter-tons — and they move around a lot with brand, whether you want adjustable coilovers, and how much of the driveline needs attention on your specific truck. The Real Reason Most People Lift: Tires
Nine times out of ten, height is not really the goal. The tire is. Height is just how you make room for it.
That matters because tire and wheel choice drives the whole build. A taller tire changes your effective gearing, throws your speedometer off by a few percent, adds unsprung weight your brakes have to deal with, and can rub at full steering lock even when it looks like it clears sitting still. Wheel backspacing and offset decide whether that tire tucks under the fender or pushes out past it — and pushing it out adds leverage on your wheel bearings and steering components.

Alignment, Driveline, and Ride Quality
Every inch you raise a truck changes angles that the factory engineered around. Here is what actually moves.
Caster and camber. Raising the front pulls the top of the tire inward and reduces caster, which makes the steering feel vague and wears the inside edges of the front tires. Small lifts can usually be dialed back in with the factory adjusters. Past about 3 inches, you need aftermarket upper control arms to get the numbers back into spec — that is not an upsell, it is the reason the kit lists them.
CV and ball joint angles. On independent front suspensions, lifting steepens the CV axle angle. Too steep for too long and you are replacing axles instead of enjoying the truck. Kits that include a crossmember or differential drop exist specifically to keep those angles reasonable.
Rear pinion angle and driveshaft. Tall rear blocks rotate the axle and can introduce vibration at highway speed. Shims, a carrier bearing spacer, or a longer driveshaft fix it, and a good shop checks for it instead of hoping.
Brake lines, ABS lines, and headlight aim. Stock lines are cut to stock travel; stretch them at full droop and you will find out the hard way. And headlights aimed for a level truck point into the mirrors of everyone in front of you once the nose comes up. Re-aiming them takes ten minutes and almost nobody does it.

Living With a Lifted Truck in St. Louis
A lift is a daily-driver decision, not a weekend one. A few things that come up constantly around here.
Parking garages. Downtown, the Central West End, and a lot of Clayton garages post clearances in the 6-foot-8 to 7-foot range. A 4-inch lift plus 35s on a crew cab can put you over that, and finding out at the entrance ramp is a bad afternoon. Measure your truck at the mirrors and any bed rack after the install.
Highway chip damage. The taller you sit, the more your front end eats gravel thrown by the truck ahead of you on I–64 and I–270. That is worth a conversation about paint protection film on the bumper, hood edge, and rockers — we covered why in rock chips on St. Louis highways.
Winter. New suspension hardware spends its first January in Missouri road salt. Fresh bolts, bare control arm surfaces, and exposed shock bodies all corrode faster than you would like — how Missouri road salt damages your car applies to the parts you cannot see just as much as the paint.
Fuel economy and wind. Expect to give up something. A taller stance and heavier all-terrain tires typically cost one to three miles per gallon, and the truck gets more sensitive to crosswinds on the open stretch of I–70. A tonneau cover claws a little of that back and keeps the bed usable.
Inspection. Missouri still requires a safety inspection on older, higher-mileage vehicles, and it covers steering and suspension components, tire condition, and headlights — all things a sloppy install can put out of spec. A properly installed kit passes; a bargain-bin kit thrown on in a driveway sometimes does not.
So Which One Should You Buy
Strip away the marketing and it comes down to four questions.
Get a leveling kit if…
You mainly want the rake gone, you are happy with one tire size up, the truck tows or hauls regularly, and you want to spend a few hundred dollars rather than a few thousand. It is the highest-satisfaction-per-dollar modification in this entire category and it is what we recommend to more people than any full lift.
Get a 2–3 inch suspension lift if…
You want 33s or 35s with real clearance, you actually leave pavement sometimes, and you want the truck to still drive close to stock. This is the sweet spot for most St. Louis trucks — enough to look and work the part without rebuilding the driveline.
Go 4 inches or taller if…
The look is the point, or you genuinely need the clearance for trails, deep snow, or a specific build. Go in with your eyes open on cost, the supporting parts, and the fact that you are changing how the truck drives — and have it done by someone who will set the geometry back up correctly.
Skip all of it if…
You are leasing, you park in a low garage every day, or the truck is doing heavy towing where factory rake and geometry are doing you a favor. There is no shame in a stock-height truck with a good set of wheels.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I really need an alignment after a leveling kit?
Yes. Raising the front changes camber and caster, and driving on those numbers will wear the inside edges off your front tires in a few thousand miles. Treat the alignment as part of the install, not an optional extra.
Will a leveling kit ruin my ride quality?
A quality strut spacer barely changes it. What does hurt ride quality is cranking torsion keys past their intended range or using a cheap spacer that eats up suspension travel, which makes the front end crash over bumps.
How big a tire can I fit with a 2-inch level?
On most late-model half-tons, roughly one size up — commonly a 33-inch tire, sometimes with light trimming at the front of the wheel well. Exact clearance depends on your wheel offset, so measure before ordering.
Does a lift kit void my factory warranty?
It does not void the whole warranty, but a manufacturer can deny a claim on a component if the modification caused the failure — wheel bearings, CV axles, and steering parts are the usual points of argument. Keep your install paperwork.
Leveling kit or lift kit if I tow regularly?
A leveling kit is generally the safer choice. Factory rake exists so the truck sits level under load, and taller lifts raise your hitch height and center of gravity, which affects trailer geometry and stability.
How long does installation take?
A leveling kit is usually two to four hours plus alignment. A 2- to 3-inch suspension lift is most of a day. A 4-inch-plus kit with control arms, brake lines, and driveline work often runs one to two days.
Can you install a kit I bought online?
Usually yes, and we will tell you honestly if the kit is missing supporting parts your truck needs. Bring the complete box — incomplete kits are the single most common reason a suspension job stalls halfway through.
How much fuel economy will I lose?
Plan on one to three miles per gallon with a lift and heavier all-terrain tires. Most of that comes from the tires — added weight and rolling resistance — rather than the height itself.
