How Much Does a Lift Kit Cost in St. Louis?

A plain breakdown of what lifting a truck actually costs — parts, labor, and the line items most quotes leave out.

The first number people hear for a lift kit is almost never the number they end up paying. Not because anyone is being dishonest, but because a lift kit is not one purchase — it is a suspension change that pulls several other things along with it.

A kit advertised at a low price online is a box of parts. What lands on your invoice is that box plus installation, an alignment, and usually tires. Sometimes more, depending on how high you go and what the truck needs afterward to drive correctly.

Here is how the money actually breaks down, so you can read a quote and know what you are looking at.

Leveling Kit or Lift Kit? Start Here

These get used interchangeably and they are not the same job or the same price.

Leveling kit

Most trucks leave the factory with the front sitting lower than the rear, so the truck stays level when loaded. A leveling kit raises the front roughly 1.5 to 2.5 inches to even out the stance. It is a small parts package — usually spacers or new coils — and a short labor job. It often lets you fit a slightly larger tire, and it is by far the cheapest way to change how a truck looks.

Suspension lift kit

A full suspension lift raises the entire truck, front and rear, typically 4 to 8 inches or more. It replaces or relocates real suspension components: control arms, shocks, springs, track bars, sometimes the driveshaft and brake lines. More parts, far more labor, and more downstream changes to keep the geometry correct.

Body lift

A body lift raises the cab and bed off the frame with spacers. The suspension does not change, so ground clearance underneath stays the same — you get room for larger tires and a taller look without touching ride quality. Less common now, but still the cheapest path to tire clearance on some platforms.

What Lift Kits Typically Cost

These are ranges, not quotes. The truck matters enormously — a half-ton Silverado, an F-250, and a Jeep Wrangler are three different jobs, and IFS trucks generally cost more to lift than solid-axle platforms. Brand choice within a category swings the number too.

Two things drive the labor column more than anything else: how many factory components have to come off, and whether anything fights you on the way out. Rust-seized hardware on an older Missouri truck can add real hours, and that is not something anyone can quote accurately over the phone.

The Costs That Do Not Show Up in the Kit Price

This is where budgets get blown. None of these are optional add-ons a shop invents — they are what the truck needs to drive right afterward.

Alignment. Non-negotiable. Changing ride height changes camber, caster, and toe. Skip it and you will scrub the inside edges off a set of new tires in a few thousand miles. On bigger lifts you may need adjustable upper control arms or a cam bolt kit just to bring the numbers back into spec.

Tires and wheels. Most people lifting a truck want larger tires, and that is usually the single biggest line on the invoice — often more than the kit itself. A set of 35s in a decent all-terrain adds up quickly, and if you are also changing to a wheel with different offset to clear the new suspension, that is a second purchase. We handle this side in house through custom wheels and tires, which is worth doing together so fitment is checked once rather than guessed at twice.

Driveshaft and driveline angles. Past roughly 4 inches on many trucks, the rear driveshaft angle gets steep enough to cause vibration. The fix is a carrier bearing drop, a transfer case indexing ring, or a lengthened driveshaft. Not every build needs it — but when it does, it is a real cost.

Brake lines and ABS lines. Extra travel means factory-length lines can end up stretched at full droop. Extended lines are inexpensive parts with meaningful labor.

Speedometer and module calibration. Larger tires cover more ground per revolution, so the speedometer and odometer read low and shift points move. Recalibrating the module corrects it. On newer trucks with driver-assist systems, camera and radar aiming may also need attention after a height change.

Steering and track bar correction. On solid-axle trucks, lifting without a corrected track bar shifts the axle off center and can introduce wander. Good kits include the hardware; cheap ones often do not.

A useful ruleBudget roughly the price of the kit again for everything around it on a moderate lift — alignment, small hardware, calibration — and budget separately for tires. If a quote seems dramatically below everyone else’s, look at what is missing from it rather than assuming you found a deal.

How Height Changes the Whole Equation

2 inches

The value sweet spot. You get a level, purposeful stance and room for a moderately larger tire. Ride quality stays close to stock, driveline angles barely change, and the parts list is short. Most daily-driven trucks in St. Louis land here and their owners stay happy with the decision.

4 to 6 inches

Now you are changing the truck meaningfully. Real clearance, room for 35s, and a noticeably different look. This is also the range where the supporting costs kick in — control arms, possible driveshaft work, calibration. Quality matters a lot here; a well-engineered kit at this height can ride better than a poorly engineered 3-inch kit.

6 inches and up

A build, not an accessory. Expect to address driveline, steering, and braking as a system, and expect the truck to feel different to drive: higher center of gravity, more body roll, more wind noise, worse fuel economy. Worth it if the truck has a job that requires it. Expensive and impractical if it does not.

What Lifting Does to Daily Driving

Worth being honest about before you spend the money.

  • Fuel economy drops. Between the aerodynamics and the heavier, taller tires, expect to lose a couple of miles per gallon on a moderate lift and more on a big one.
  • Braking distances lengthen. Larger, heavier tires change the effective gearing and add rotating mass. Factory brakes are working harder than they were designed to.
  • Getting in gets harder. Not a small thing if you have kids, a dog, or knees with opinions. Steps or running boards often become a follow-up purchase.
  • Parking garages become a variable. Downtown clearance bars are usually 6’8”. A tall truck on 35s is a real planning consideration.
  • Some warranty exposure. A lift does not void a factory warranty outright, but a dealer can decline a claim they can tie to the modification. Professional installation and documentation help considerably here.

Missouri Roads and the Underside of Your Truck

A lift exposes suspension components you never used to think about, and around here that matters. Winter brine and road salt on I-64 and I-270 attack fresh control arms, shock bodies, and bare hardware the same way they attack everything else — we wrote about what road salt does to a vehicle in more detail.

Practically: ask what finish the kit components carry, wash the undercarriage through the winter, and re-torque suspension hardware after the first few hundred miles and again after a season. Chip damage from gravel is also worth planning for on a truck that now throws more of it — paint protection film on the rockers and lower doors is a common pairing for exactly that reason.

Getting an Accurate Quote

Anyone can give you a number for a kit. A useful quote requires knowing the truck. Bring us year, make, model, cab and bed configuration, drivetrain, current tire size, and what you want the truck to do — tow, haul, see gravel roads, or just look right in the driveway.

A written quote should itemize: the kit and brand, installation labor, alignment, any correction parts, tires and wheels if included, and calibration. If a line is not on there, ask whether it is genuinely not needed for your build or simply not included.

Will a lift kit ruin my ride quality?

A well-engineered kit installed correctly should not. Some kits with quality shocks actually ride better than stock. Ride quality suffers when a cheap kit is used, when it is installed without correcting geometry, or when the lift height outruns what the suspension design can handle gracefully.

Do I need an alignment after a lift kit?

Yes, always. Changing ride height changes camber, caster, and toe. Driving on a fresh lift without an alignment will wear the inside edges off new tires quickly and can make the truck wander. Larger lifts may also need adjustable control arms to bring the alignment back into spec.

Will my speedometer be wrong after larger tires?

Yes, until it is recalibrated. Larger tires travel farther per revolution, so the speedometer and odometer read lower than your actual speed and distance. Recalibrating the vehicle module corrects the reading and restores proper shift points.

Is a leveling kit enough, or should I do a full lift?

If your goal is a level stance and a modestly larger tire on a daily-driven truck, a leveling kit does the job for a fraction of the cost with almost no downstream expense. Step up to a full lift when you need genuine ground clearance or want tires a leveling kit cannot clear.
