Types Of Tints

Dyed Window Tint

  • Features: Made of multiple layers of dyed film.

  • Benefits: Affordable, reduces glare, and provides privacy.

  • Drawbacks: Can fade over time and offers minimal heat reduction.

Metalized Window Tint

  • Features: Contains tiny metallic particles to reflect heat and UV rays.

  • Benefits: Stronger and more durable, provides good heat rejection.

  • Drawbacks: Can interfere with radio, GPS, and cell signals.

Carbon Window Tint

  • Features: Made from carbon fiber particles, does not contain metal.

  • Benefits: Blocks infrared radiation (heat), doesn’t fade, and doesn’t interfere with electronics.

  • Drawbacks: More expensive than dyed and metalized tints.

Ceramic Window Tint

  • Features: Uses nano-ceramic technology for superior heat rejection and UV protection.

  • Benefits: Best heat reduction, blocks UV rays, reduces glare, and doesn’t interfere with signals.

  • Drawbacks: Most expensive option.

Hybrid Window Tint

  • Features: A mix of dyed and metalized tint.

  • Benefits: Offers good heat and UV protection without too much signal interference.

  • Drawbacks: More expensive than dyed tint but less than ceramic.

Crystalline Window Tint

    • Features: A multi-layer optical film designed to provide high clarity and heat rejection.

    • Benefits: Blocks heat and UV rays while maintaining a nearly clear appearance.

    • Drawbacks: Very costly and does not offer privacy.

Chameleon Tint

  • Features: Changes colors depending on lighting and viewing angles.

  • Benefits: Stylish, offers UV and heat protection, and provides privacy.

  • Drawbacks: Expensive and may not be legal in some areas.

Tinting Laws For Different States

Visible Light Transmission (VLT%)

This refers to the percentage of light allowed through the window. Each state sets a legal limit for the front side windows, rear side windows, and rear windshield.

Windshield Tinting Restrictions

Most states only allow tinting on the top portion of the windshield (typically above the AS-1 line), and the darkness must meet state-approved standards.

Reflectivity Restrictions

Some states limit how reflective tint can be to prevent excessive glare and ensure driver visibility.

Medical Exemptions

Some states allow darker tints for individuals with medical conditions that require reduced sun exposure. You may need to apply for an exemption and carry proof in your vehicle.

Mirror and Sticker Requirements

In certain states, if your rear window is tinted, dual side mirrors are required. Some states also require a certification sticker on the window to confirm legal compliance.

Color Restrictions

Some states ban specific tint colors, such as red, yellow, or blue, to ensure visibility and compliance with law enforcement standards.
